Perfume River Nights is a powerful and tension-filled award- winning novel about the heartbreak   of war, the lure of vengeance, and the self-destructiveness of violence. Maurer tells a gut-wrenching story of the Vietnam War that will have readers needing to catch their breath but unable to turn away. Friendships deepen within the deadly arena of war evoking promises that are hard to keep and even harder to amend. Tensions flare with lives at risk. Readers will feel the terror that looms beyond the next turn in the jungle trail. Perfume River Nights is a book that is hard to read without being deeply moved. When you turn the last page you’ll wish there was more.

Eighteen-year-old Jimmy Miller, called Singer by his platoon mates, wants to prove his bravery in the trials of war, but he never considered how hard it would be to kill a man. He doesn’t think about death and dying; he only imagines the glory. But when a vicious North Vietnamese Army ambush engulfs Singer and his friends, everything changes. In the heat of battle, Singer confronts the terrible truth of war and discovers a frightening darkness within himself. His struggle to survive takes on a deeper meaning that tests his courage in ways he never expected.

What readers are saying about Perfume River Nights
"A very impactful book
"I am writing this review realizing that I cannot sufficiently put into words the quality and impact of this book. It is a must read for anyone wanting more understanding and empathy for what many our Viet Nam veterans endured in that war. The high quality of writing drew me into the experiences of the main character so powerfully that there were times that I had to put the book down. It is an emotional experience to read this book and I would highly recommend it."  -Clint D., Amazon Review, 9-6-16

" ... great job bringing the characters and landscape to life. It is an amazing story which is filled with action and suprise. The type of book that keeps you up late because it is very hard to put down." -Amazon Review, 3-6-17

THE NEW GUY

I can’t remember his name.

That’s a lie,
I never knew it.

I never knew him.
I didn’t want to know him.

I didn’t want to know one more guy.
I already carried too many names.

He was always just the new guy

Even when we patrolled together,
Shared a foxhole
Or fought side by side.

He was always just the new guy.
Just another new face
That I didn’t want to know,
Didn’t want to carry,
However briefly.

It made it easier to carry his body to the helicopter.

But I ended up carrying his face anyway.
Now I wish I knew his name.

River Moon

The moon rises,

The river dances in its radiance.

I wonder if you see the same moon.
I wonder if you are watching the same dance.

I wonder if the moon
And the dancing river
Remind you of me.
